Terceira, Azores, Portugal
Under the Design/Construction Contract for Rehabilitation of Vitorino Nemésio Avenue, between Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória in Terceira Island, Azores, the design projects of 11 overpasses, in their different phases, were developed by Cenor. These engineering structures include 11 overpasses.
In general, the structural solution consists of a portal frame of 2 spans, varying in length from 20m to 22m, with a deck composed of precast prestressed concrete I-girders. Piers and abutments with typical configuration were used in this project.
With regard to some specific features of these engineering structures, one may highlight the heterogeneity related to the foundations, as a result of the geological formations of volcanic origin. In addition, it is also worth noting the difficulty in obtaining consistent results for the strenght characteristics of concrete, which depended largely on the local aggregates.
